  Interview with the famous Korean movie star Ahn Sung-ki
Talent is hidden in your potential
  Ahn Sung-ki is famous as a screen actor. He is also the fore runner of Korea in the community of motion picture actors-actress. HUFS graduated with a degree in Vietnamese language, he performed a variety of extra curricular activities including drama. The Argus reporter asked him to talk about his past experience.
He decided to enter HUFS because he liked its ambience which his cousin encouraged him to experience. He also liked the idea of not having to take any math examinations since he was very poor at numbers. The first round of entrance tests was a failure but his second attempt paid off.
As a freshman, he was concerned about Vietnam and so decide to major in Vietnamese he even tried ROTC because he wanted to participate in the war as an officer wish could not fulfilled because when he signed up to go there, the war had ended. As a result, he and his friends majoring Vietnamese lost interest in their major study.
Even so, he greatly enjoyed his activities at HUFS. He participated in the HUFS theatrical club and performed in many plays. He liked the club so much that once he spent his tuition money for his club activities and he used the prizes that he received to finances education. Looking back it was a reckless investment he said. But he said that the club activities eventually lead to his acting career.
What he found especially enjoyable was the international atmosphere that HUFS offered The campus was small but because it was small students interacted with one another frequently and closely. He smiled adding that he could meet all his friends just by hanging around the toilets.
He started cinema acting when he was five years old. Although later on he had to stopped it because of his study. He then became just a regular high school student. His academic performance went downhill. And he agonized over what to persue-college work or acting.
But he could not contain his passion for acting. He knew that he wanted to develope something enjoyable even if it meant a lot of works. At one point, he took tests to become an employee for a large corporation but he failed. The companies he tried to get into a student who majored in Vietnamese language because south Vietnam was defeated in the war.
After a great deal of thinking, he restarted acting by using his theatrical experience as a momentum. His acting began at the lowest point playing roles as a busboy in a Chinese restaurant while working on several scenarios. He worked very hard to cultivate his talent so that he could act in many different fields of acting. His tireless effort paid off, as he began to recognize by people around him.
He played various part in many different and enjoyed immensely. He thought too that accomplish his role in each movie was very important. He was glad that his action made his audience sometimes happy, sometimes sad and impressed at times. He said, " I always feel that I and audience sharing sentiments of the same age."
We seem to react and respond to comtemporary events the same way. During the military years, everything in the movie industry was censored. People movies refrained from making critical social comments, but he wanted to enlighten audiences by telling then that censorship was wrong and that it was also wrong distort contents of cinemas.
In the movies he performed such as <White War>, <Military of Southern troop>, he tried to express his convictions about realistic problems. His efforts were recognized by the public and he was awarded many prizes related to films reflecting social issues. He said that actors should have an interest in real life problem and play by being mindful of the integrity of Korean movies.
He is now pleased that the market share Korean movies is gaining popularity approaching that of Hollywood films. His only disappointment is that movies expressing the matters true belief are being ignored unfavorable commercial productions. And he agreed Mun sung-kun, Korean actor's saying that wise audiences make good movies.
When he was asked what his opinion about success, he replied that standards of success should be changed by college when they grow older. "Nowadays", he said, "people are apt to consider real success as a worldly desire. But I think true success rise in one's sense of satisfaction regarding one's own work. If we perform with faith in our assigned works, we will get recognition and financial reward at the same time.
He advised HUFSans to cultivate their hidden talents and careers, adding that the foundation of success in the life of young person depends on his/her awareness of his/her own true interest and aptitude. He also said that successful performance in one task will lead to success in the subsequent tasks.
The importance of believing in one's own potentials and feeling happy about developing them can not be overemphasized, he said.
