Inexpensive, easily washed, and hard-wearing, blue
jeans first appeared in the United States in 1850. A
miner digging for gold in the California gold rush asked
tailor Levi Strauss to make him a sturdy pair of trousers,
because ordinary fabric wore out so quickly. Jeans are
made of denim, a tough cotton fabric colored with the
natural blue indigo dye.
